Planning a campervan trip across multiple countries often means dealing with different toll systems, vignette requirements, and local traffic regulations. Because these rules vary from region to region, it’s important to understand how they work before you travel.
This guide provides an overview of tolls, fines, and vignettes across our rental destinations to help you prepare for your journey, avoid unexpected charges, and travel with confidence.
1. General Tolls & Fines Policy
When renting with Indie Campers, please remember that tolls and vignettes are not included in your rental price and must be managed and paid by the driver.
Immediate Payment: Any parking tickets, fines, traffic offense penalties, or tolls should be settled by you immediately whenever possible.
Unpaid Tolls and Fines: If a toll or fine is left unpaid during your trip, the local authorities will contact Indie Campers. You will then be charged for the fine/toll amount, alongside an administrative handling fee.

Administrative Fees Breakdown:
€15 / €25: Applied when Indie Campers transfers the fine/toll liability directly to you by providing your driver identification to the authorities.
€50: Applied when Indie Campers pays the fine/toll directly on your behalf to expedite the process.
Payment Collection: These charges will be deducted from your security deposit or the credit card associated with your booking. Please note that unpaid invoices may accrue interest and additional flat fees as required by law.
2. Vignettes in Europe: Where and How to Buy
A vignette is a compulsory road tax sticker (or digital registration) required to drive on certain motorways in specific European countries. Unlike standard tolls, which are based on distance traveled, a vignette covers the vehicle for a set period of time.
Where are they required? You will need a valid vignette to drive in Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Moldova, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Switzerland, and Austria. Driving without one can result in hefty fines from local authorities.
Austria Exemption: Good news! For standard Indie Campers fleet bookings, we have already purchased the vignette for Austria. You can request it during check-in. (Note: Lost or improperly used vignettes will not be refunded).

Where to Buy: You can typically purchase vignettes online before you even enter the country, or physically at border crossings, post offices, and gas stations. Here are the specific portals and physical locations to secure yours:
Bulgaria: Purchase online via BGToll or offline at common border and retail points of sale.
Czech Republic: Buy online at Motorway.cz, or pick up a physical sticker at petrol pumps, Czech Post branches, Cash Point branches, ABA establishments, or other officially labeled points.
Hungary: Purchase your e-vignette online at National Toll Payment Services.
Moldova: Register and purchase online at e-Vinieta.
Romania: Buy online via e-Rovinieta or Roviniete.ro.
Slovakia: Purchase online at eznamka.sk or in-person at petrol stations and Slovakia Post branches.
Slovenia: Check official sales points at DARS.si or buy physical vignettes at border crossings, gas stations, and major tourist stops.
France, Germany, Italy, and Spain operate different road charging systems from the vignette-based models used in some other European countries.
- In Germany, most motorways (Autobahn) are toll-free for standard passenger vehicles and campervans. However, certain cities require an environmental sticker (Umweltplakette) to enter low-emission zones.
- France, Italy, and Spain mainly use distance-based toll roads. Drivers typically collect a ticket when entering the motorway and pay when exiting, either by cash, card, or electronic payment methods.
- Some regions are also introducing “free-flow” toll systems without physical toll booths. In these cases, tolls must usually be paid online within a set period after using the road.
Because toll systems and payment deadlines can vary between countries and operators, we recommend checking local requirements before travelling.
3. Navigating Toll Roads in the U.S.
The U.S. toll system varies widely by state, utilizing electronic transponders, license plate billing, and occasional cash booths.

Payment Methods: * Transponders: Systems like E-ZPass (covers 17 East Coast states), SunPass (Florida), and TxTag (Texas) allow seamless travel.
License Plate Billing: Cashless toll roads will automatically scan and bill your license plate.
Our U.S. Policy: Indie Campers vehicles are not equipped with transponders. If you utilize license plate billing or leave tolls unpaid during your trip, we will charge the toll amount plus an administrative fee per transaction after your rental.

4. Navigating Toll Roads in Australia
Australia operates on a fully electronic, cashless toll system, meaning there are no physical toll booths to stop and pay at.
Payment Window: If you drive on a toll road, you typically have 72 hours to pay online to avoid penalties.
The Best Option - Linkt Account: For travelers crossing multiple states, we highly recommend setting up a Linkt account. It covers all toll roads in Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane, works without a physical tag, and prevents you from incurring unexpected fines and administrative fees from us.
Missed a Toll? You can open a Linkt account within 9–10 days of your travel to backdate the charge, or purchase a state-specific temporary pass (like a Sydney, Melbourne, or Brisbane Pass).
5. Handling Traffic Fines and Parking Tickets
While we hope your trip is entirely smooth sailing, it’s important to know what happens if you accidentally run a red light, exceed the speed limit, or get a parking ticket.
Pay the Authorities Directly: If you receive a physical ticket on your windshield or are pulled over by law enforcement, please pay the fine immediately to the local authorities to avoid late fees and complications.
When We Receive a Fine: Many traffic cameras automatically capture violations (like speeding or driving in restricted zones) and send the ticket directly to the registered owner of the vehicle (Indie Campers).
The Process: If a fine is processed through us, we will strive to notify you via email whenever possible. This communication will provide instructions on how the payment is being handled or give you the contact information for the local entity so you can settle it directly. Remember, administrative fees (€25 for transferring liability, or €50 if we must pay it on your behalf) will apply on top of the actual fine amount.
6. Marketplace Bookings
Similar to IndieCampers bookings, any parking tickets, fines, traffic offense penalties, or tolls, occurring during your booking should be paid by you immediately if possible.
