Before your trip, it is important to make sure that everyone who plans to drive the campervan meets the applicable license, age, and driver requirements.
The requirements may vary depending on whether your booking is with the Indie Campers fleet or through our Marketplace, as well as the country where you are travelling.
IndieCampers Bookings
1. Driving License Requirements
All drivers must hold a valid driving license that allows them to legally operate the vehicle they are renting.
Your license must also be valid for the type of transmission of the vehicle you are driving, whether manual or automatic.
International Driving Permit (IDP)
Depending on your nationality and destination, you may also need an International Driving Permit (IDP) in addition to your valid driving license.
- Travelers with a European driving license generally do not need an IDP when travelling within Europe.
- In certain countries, non-European citizens may be required to carry an IDP together with their original driving license. This can apply, for example, in countries such as Italy, Austria, and Greece.
- Requirements can vary depending on your nationality, license, and destination.
It is the driver's responsibility to check whether an IDP or any other driving documentation is required for their trip.
Indie Campers does not issue or obtain International Driving Permits on behalf of customers.
We recommend checking with the relevant local traffic authorities, embassy, or consulate before travelling to make sure that your driving documents are valid for your destination.
2. Minimum Age Requirements
Indie Campers Fleet
For bookings with the Indie Campers fleet:
- Europe: The minimum age is 18 years for short- and medium-term rentals.
- United States, Canada, and Australia: The minimum age is 21 years.
Drivers Under 25
Drivers under the age of 25 must select the Basic Protection plan.
Drivers under 25 are not eligible for the Premium Protection plan.
Marketplace Bookings
For Marketplace bookings, the minimum age may vary depending on the vehicle and host.
Please check the vehicle rules and booking information for the specific age requirements that apply to your reservation.
Marketplace hosts may establish different minimum age requirements.
3. How Many People Can Drive the Campervan?
The number of people who can legally drive your campervan depends on the type of booking and, for Indie Campers fleet bookings, the protection plan selected.
Indie Campers Fleet
The maximum number of permitted drivers depends on your selected Protection Plan.
Additional drivers can be added:
- During the online check-in process; or
- At the time of pick-up.
If you are unsure how many drivers are included in your booking, please check the protection plan associated with your reservation.
For more information, see our article about Protection Plans.
4. Requirements for Additional Drivers
Every person who will drive the campervan must meet the applicable driving requirements.
This means that an additional driver must:
- Meet the applicable minimum age requirement.
- Hold a valid driving license.
- Have any additional driving permits required for the destination, such as an IDP where applicable.
- Provide valid and up-to-date documentation when required.
If there is more than one driver, all drivers must be present at pick-up and provide their required documentation.
This allows the depot team to verify that each person who will drive the vehicle meets the applicable requirements before the rental begins.
For more information about the documents required at pick-up, please see:
Essential Documents and Depot Procedures for Pick-Up
5. Before Your Trip
To avoid delays at pick-up, we recommend confirming the following before travelling:
- Everyone who intends to drive is registered as an authorized driver where required.
- Each driver meets the applicable minimum age.
- Each driver has a valid driving license.
- Your license is valid for the vehicle's transmission type.
- You have an IDP if one is required for your nationality and destination.
- All required driver documentation is valid and up to date.
- You understand how many drivers are permitted under your booking and protection plan.
Please remember that having a driving license does not automatically mean that a person is authorized to drive the rented vehicle. The driver must meet all applicable age, documentation, booking, and protection-plan requirements.
For information about the documents required at pick-up, please see Essential Documents and Depot Procedures for Pick-Up.
For information about the coverage and benefits associated with your protection plan, please see Discover Our Protection Plans.
Marketplace Bookings
If your booking was made through the Indie Campers Marketplace, the rules regarding additional drivers depend on the type of host.
Professional Host
If your vehicle is provided by a professional host, please contact the host directly to confirm whether additional drivers are permitted and what requirements apply.
Private Host
For private-host Marketplace bookings, you may be able to add additional drivers through Indie Campers Customer Support.
In locations where this option is available — Spain, Italy, Germany, Austria, Sweden, the Netherlands, and France — up to two additional drivers can be added by contacting Customer Support and requesting to speak with an agent.
Please note:
- Additional drivers are currently not available for UK Marketplace bookings.
- Where two drivers are registered, both drivers must be present at pick-up.
- Both drivers must provide valid and up-to-date documentation at pick-up.
