Are all campervans insured?

Every van in the IndieCampers fleet is insured against damage to third-party vehicles and property. That insurance applies while you drive within the countries where your rental is permitted.

"Insured" and "Protection Plan" are not the same thing

Insurance is what covers third parties if you're in an accident. Your Protection Plan is separate: it's what sets the maximum amount you can be liable for, and the size of your security deposit. Choosing a higher plan lowers what you'd pay out of pocket if something happens.

That distinction matters because most of the questions people have about "being covered" — how much you'd owe after an accident, what's excluded, how the deposit works — are answered by your plan, not your insurance.

What happens if you have an accident — do you have to pay?

If you're in an accident, the most you'll pay toward covered damage is capped by your Protection Plan — your Maximum Liability. That's not the full repair bill, only your share up to the cap, and a higher plan lowers it.

But whether your coverage applies at all comes down to one thing: you must report the accident and complete an Accident Report Form. Without a valid, timely report, your Protection Plan can be voided and you may be liable for the full cost of repairs — no matter which plan you chose. In many regions a police report is also required, so check what's needed at the scene.

Where you can drive

Your insurance is only valid inside the countries listed in your Rental Agreement. Driving the van outside those countries is not permitted and would leave you uninsured, so plan your route within the allowed territory.

What's never covered

Some things sit outside insurance and every Protection Plan — for example theft and vandalism of the van, and driving under the influence. Before you travel, it's worth reading the full exclusions so there are no surprises.
