How can I tell whether the campervan I'm renting is from the Indie Campers fleet or the Marketplace — and what changes because of it?
Every campervan on our platform belongs to one of two fleets, and you book both through Indie Campers. The difference is who owns the van, and that changes a few of the "rules" for your trip — how you book, where you pick up, your cancellation terms, and who to call if something comes up on the road. It's worth a quick check before you book.
The fastest way to tell them apart: look at the icon on the listing. The orange Indie Campers icon means it's our own fleet. The purple Marketplace icon means it belongs to an independent host.
A Marketplace booking isn't "less safe" — you still book and pay through Indie Campers, and the vehicle is insured for your trip. It just works a little differently in the details below.
Not sure which fleet a van belongs to?
Run a booking simulation and check the icon on the results. Our step-by-step guide walks you through it: How to book your road trip: Detailed Step by Step for creating and saving a Booking.
Indie Campers fleet
Who owns it: these vehicles are owned and run by Indie Campers.
Booking: confirmed directly with us — there's no separate host-approval step.
Pick-up: you collect the van from an Indie Campers Pick-Up Centre.
Price, availability and extras: set by Indie Campers and consistent across our fleet.
Cancellation: you choose your cancellation policy (Basic or Flexible) when you book. See our cancellation policy for details.
Protection and support on the road: your trip is covered by an Indie Campers protection plan, and if anything goes wrong during your trip, you contact Indie Campers — our team handles it.
Marketplace
Who owns it: these vehicles belong to independent hosts who rent them out through our platform.
Booking: the host has to accept your request before it's confirmed, so it isn't always instant.
Pick-up: you collect the van from the host's location, not from an Indie Campers Pick-Up Centre.
Price, availability and extras: set by the host, so they vary from one listing to the next.
Cancellation: hosts choose one of four policies — Super Flexible, Flexible, Moderate or Strict — so always check the cancellation terms shown on that specific listing before you book. See the Modify Your Marketplace Booking for details.
Protection and support on the road: your cover comes either from the host's own plan or from an Indie Campers partner plan — the listing shows which. This also decides who helps you on the road: if the van is on the host's own plan, the host provides roadside assistance and on-trip support, so you contact the host; if it's on an Indie Campers partner plan, you contact Indie Campers. Check the listing before you book so you know who's on the other end of the line if you need help mid-trip.
