AdBlue policy — what it is and how to keep it topped up
If you're travelling in a modern diesel camper, it uses AdBlue alongside its fuel. This article explains what AdBlue is, how to manage it during your trip, and what to expect at return.
What is AdBlue?
AdBlue is a diesel exhaust fluid that helps modern diesel engines reduce their most polluting emissions. If your camper requires it, it has a separate AdBlue tank next to the fuel filler, and the dashboard shows the level — usually a warning light, or a gauge on newer models. You'll use far less AdBlue than fuel, but it needs topping up occasionally on longer trips.
Important: don't let AdBlue run out
AdBlue works differently from fuel in one key way. If it runs completely out, the engine may not restart once the vehicle is switched off. This is a built-in emissions requirement on modern diesels, not a fault with the camper — restarting requires adding AdBlue first, which may mean an unplanned stop.
To avoid this, top up AdBlue as soon as the warning appears. The dashboard shows your AdBlue level and remaining range, so you can check it at any time and plan your next top-up with plenty of room to spare
During your trip
- Your camper is provided with AdBlue above the minimum and no warning light showing.
- Keeping enough AdBlue in the tank to drive safely is part of maintaining the vehicle during your rental.
- Top-ups are at your own expense and are not reimbursed at return, the same as fuel.
Where to buy AdBlue
AdBlue is available at most fuel stations (at the pump or in the shop), as well as supermarkets and motoring stores. The AdBlue reseller finder can help you locate the nearest supplier while travelling.
When topping up, make sure the AdBlue goes into the AdBlue filler, not the diesel tank. The two caps are located close together, so check before filling to avoid a mix-up.
At return
Return the camper with AdBlue above the minimum and no warning light on, as it was at pickup. If it is returned below the minimum, an AdBlue Refueling Fee applies.
The fee that applies is the one set out in the Fee Document at the time of your rental.
