You'll always be charged in the local currency of your pick-up location — for example, euros if you pick up in Portugal, or US dollars if you pick up in the United States. That's the currency your booking is actually priced in.
While you're browsing, you can choose which currency to see prices in, so you can shop in whatever's most familiar. That display is just for convenience — a live conversion that moves up and down with exchange rates. The real, fixed price is the one set in the local currency of your pick-up location, and that's what you'll pay.
The currency you choose stays on screen right through checkout and your booking confirmation — but the charge itself is always taken in that local currency. So the amount that reaches your card will be in the currency of your pick-up location, not the one you were viewing, and it can look a little different once your bank gets it, for two reasons:
- Your bank converts the local-currency charge into your home currency using its own exchange rate.
- Your bank or card provider may add its own conversion or foreign-transaction fee.
Both of these are set by your bank, not by IndieCampers — so the exact amount in your home currency is between you and your card provider. If you'd rather avoid conversion fees, paying with a card that supports the local currency is usually the cheapest option.
It's also worth knowing that your security deposit hold will be in that same local currency.
